CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER
Just a quick note to thank you all for your support over the past year and to tell you our opening times over the holidays.
Here are a few pointers to ensure your pet has a safe and healthy Christmas.
Christmas and Chocolate
There are many substances that are poisonous to pets but one of the most surprising is chocolate. Every year vets across the country find themselves treating dogs who have found where Mum has stashed the children’s chocolates and eaten the lot.
The poisonous ingredient of chocolate is a compound called theobromine. It occurs naturally in the coco beans which are used to make chocolate and is present in all chocolate products in variable amounts. Dark chocolate which is high in cocoa solids and beloved by celebrity chefs contains much more theobromine than milk chocolate but even children’s Easter Eggs can contain enough to do harm. Some dogs have died after eating just 2lb or 1kg of milk chocolate and in these days of super-sized snacks it doesn’t take many jumbo bars to reach one kilo.
The signs of theobromine poisoning are excitement, nervousness, trembling and possibly even convulsions leading to death. There is no antidote but your vet will provide supportive treatment to prevent the signs worsening while your dog’s body gradually eliminates the theobromine and he recovers.
If you do find that your dog has eaten a lot of chocolate get in touch with us straight away. It is important we know how much chocolate has been eaten and the cocoa solids content, both of which should be printed on the packaging. As always the best thing is to make sure it doesn’t happen in the first place. Do store your chocolates carefully.
Grapes,Raisins,Currants,Sultanas
Fruits of the Vitis Vinifera( grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas) can, suprisingly, cause renal failure in dogs. Currently the mechanism of action remains unknown,as does the "toxic dose". Some dogs seem able to eat large quantities without any effects, while others develop renal failure after as little as a few grapes or small handful of raisins.
Poisonous Plants
Here are some examples of poisonous plants often ingested at this time of year. Holly , Ivy, Mistletoe, Poinsettia and LIllies ( these are very toxic to cats), For all these plants listed we recomend you keep them out of paws reach from your pets, If they do ingest these contact us as soon as possible, if we are closed ring our number in the normal way you will be diverted through to Vets Now Emergency Clinic.
